11 camera setups

Camera setup describes position and orientation. Camera movement describes how they change over time. Combine them deliberately.

SetupDescriptionCommon uses

Reverse shot Covers the opposite direction in an exchange shot/reverse-shot
Bird’s-eye view Looks almost straight down spatial layout or scale
High angle Looks down from a high angle vulnerability or diminished stature
Low angle Looks up from a low position power or authority
Dutch angle Tilts the horizon through camera roll unease or imbalance
Confrontational framing A wide lens placed close to the subject tension or confrontation
Isolated framing Places a small subject within substantial negative space isolation or loss
Eye level Positions the camera at the subject’s eye level a neutral viewpoint
Slightly low angle Places the camera slightly below eye level subtle emphasis
Top-down Looks straight down from directly above graphic compositions or tabletop action

Two distinctions worth keeping

  • A pan and a truck are different moves. A pan rotates the camera from a fixed position. A truck moves the camera laterally, changing the viewpoint and relative positions of foreground and background. Specify which you mean.
  • An orbit should follow a curved path. Straight interpolation between camera positions can create a polygonal path. Baimo Director uses dedicated orbit parameters to describe a circular trajectory.
